Memorial Day

Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day after the conclusion of the Americal Civil War in 1868. The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization founded by veteran Union soldiers, established this holiday as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.  Today, Memorial Day is commemorated as a fedral holiday with parades, and rememberance services to honor those who died while serving in our nation’s armed forces.
